Intrigue is present in most products of oral culture. In the stories of the Âşık, there are a number of reasons that hinder the main character's endeavors, acting as obstacles in the words of the people. These reasons are often people, but other causes may also exist. The causes of intrigue may originate from outside sources or from the main character himself. The presence of intrigue makes it difficult for the lover to achieve his goal. The main character has a number of material and spiritual helpers to overcome the obstacles surrounding him. However, these are quite limited in number compared to the reasons that constitute the intrigue. Although intrigue is seen negatively in the story, it is the most important momentum that keeps the narrative going. The narrative continues from one intrigue to another. It captures the audience's attention and ensures it is easily retained in the cultural memory. The story of Âşık Garip has been told as a well-known and much-loved story in the Turkish world. This study is based on the story of Âşık Garip from Turkish folk tales. In these stories, attention is drawn to both the things that cause the intrigue originating from the main character himself and the external (developing outside the main character) reasons that prevent the main character from achieving his goal. The focus is on how intrigues are formed in folk tales and their functions within the stories.

Entrika, sözlü kültür ürünlerinin çoğunda bulunmaktadır. Aşk hikâyelerinde asıl kahramana halk ifadesiyle ayak bağı olup işlerine engel olan birtakım sebepler bulunmaktadır. Bu durumu oluşturan çoğu zaman insanlar olduğu gibi başka nedenler de olabilmektedir. Entrikayı oluşturan sebepler, dışardan kaynaklandığı gibi asıl kahramanın kendisinden de kaynaklanabilmektedir. Entrikanın olması, âşığın amacına ulaşmasını zorlaştırır. Asıl kahramanın etrafını çevreleyen engellerden kurtulmak için birtakım maddi ve manevi yardımcıları bulunmaktadır. Ancak bunlar nicel olarak entrikayı oluşturan nedenlere oranla oldukça sınırlı sayıdadır. Entrika hikâye içerisinde olumsuz olarak görülse de anlatının devamını sağlayan en önemli ivmedir. Anlatı bir entrikadan başka bir entrikaya kadar devam eder. Anlatı dinleyicilerin dikkatlerini çeker ve kültürel bellekte kolayca kalmasını sağlar. Âşık Garip Hikâyesi Türk dünyasında tanınan ve çokça sevilen bir hikâye olarak anlatılagelmiştir. Bu çalışmada Türk halk hikâyelerinden Âşık Garip hikâyesi esas alınmıştır. Bu hikâyelerde gerek asıl kahramanın kendisinden kaynaklanan entrikaya neden olan şeyler, gerekse asıl kahramanın amacına ulaşmasına engel olan dış (asıl kahramanın dışında gelişen) nedenlere dikkat çekilmiştir. Halk hikâyelerinde entrikaların oluşma şekline ve hikâyeler içerisindeki işlevlerine odaklanılmıştır.
